Moving parent and children in Crysis Sandbox 2

In response to some of the discussion on the forums and russell's blog, I'm demonstrating a more "elegant" way to set up parent and child movement in Flowgraph.

And aside:
If you are attaching and detaching children in FG, make sure you set "KeepTransform" to "1" so that your objects don't "disappear". If left default "0", then you'll be taking your entity's global position and making it their new local position (which is far away!).

EXP2 Comments

Alex Lorenzelli
Key strength: Axonometrics demonstrate spatial complexity and experimentation.
Most significant weakness: Architecture seems sterile and lacks connection with surrounding landscape.

Alisa Parveen
Key strength: Conceptual underpinning of architecture and its connection (interconnection) with landscape.
Most significant weakness: Textures have sunk in quality compared to earlier samples, in terms of experimentation. Refer to your EXP1 textures.

Ben Filler
Key strength: Great axos and textures.
Most significant weakness: Thinking behind architecture has room to improve. Concepts are there, but expression of them through architecture is a bit literal and elements are cluttered and confusion. Next experiment focus on bringing all the ideas together using a single encompassing concept.

Bridget Allen
Key strength: Clear intent and purpose behind architecture. Great textures.
Most significant weakness: Architecture lacking a sense of resolve and refinement. Perhaps the scheme could have capitalised on using detailed elements to articulate the massing model.

Christopher John Day
Key strength: Architecture demonstrates confidence and maturity, taking risk without being reckless.
Most significant weakness: Presentation of final scheme, images + textures + axos could be arranged to display thoughtfulness behind design and thinking.

Chun Ho Chiu
Key strength: The proportions of the architecture are appropriate in scale.
Most significant weakness: Drawings if improved could have moved this scheme up a grade. Architecture would benefit from further risk taking and experimentation.

James Crowe
Key strength: Consideration of architecture proportions, texturing and siting.
Most significant weakness: Scheme could benefit greatly if it were presented more holistically, whether this is in poster form or video clip.

Jiming Wang
Key strength: Work shows competency in architecture and drawing.
Most significant weakness: Scheme lacks detail in both architecture and landscape. In the next experiment please consider creating architecture that engages the landscape and that excites a viewer’s attention or experience

Kaung Myat Htoo Kyi
Key strength: Axonometrics were a great starting point for creating some engaging and interesting architecture
Most significant weakness: Ideas were not realised in architecture or landform.

Minshan May Huang
Key strength: Great drawings and animated gifs for presentation. Also placement of textures on architecture ties the fragmented surfaces together.
Most significant weakness: Lack of complexity in massing model and dialogue with landscape.

Mohamad Saj
Key strength: Arrangement and proportions of architecture is thoughtful and refined.
Most significant weakness: Improvement in drawings, precision and experimentation could have pushed this scheme up a grade.

Nastaran (Nina) Jafarigolrokh
Key strength: Ideas and concepts are refined and thoughtful.
Most significant weakness: Drawing could improve with more care and time taken. Architecture needs to push boundaries and express the ideas which you have so eloquently described in text.

Nikko Sudirman
Key strength: Alignment of architectural concepts with built form.
Most significant weakness: Landscape lacked development compared to the architecture.

Suek Yi Lim
Key strength: Architecture considered in detail circulation, connecting spaces and movement between levels.
Most significant weakness: Lack of understanding of axonometrics.

Weijie (Mike) Shen
Key strength: Beautiful how the architecture touches the water, then retreats into the mountains.
Most significant weakness: Presentation of images and architecture could have pushed this scheme up a grade.

Wen Chen
Key strength: Beautiful drawings and textures, precision in linework and rendering shows care and consideration.
Most significant weakness: Architecture is a bit too modest, it could benefit from some complexity whilst keeping its overall simplicity.

Yu-En (Timmy) Lin
Key strength: Detailed attention to landscape and its relationship to the architecture.
Most significant weakness: Neon lights a bit overboard, especially when drawing much inspiration from Falling Water. Aim to learn lessons from architects and their buildings. What is it about the precedent which engages your attention?

Making terrain from contours in Crysis

Hi all, this is a short tutorial on how to make terrain from contour maps. It will be in 2 sections: 1 on crysis, 1 on photoshop.

Photoshop: creating a heightmap from contour map
1. Open Crysis and Go to: Terrain > edit terrain. Then go to: File > export heightmap
[The reason for exporting one from crysis is just to get the image size + format correct.]
2. Open the heightmap that you saved in photoshop
3. Find yourself a contour map (google) and open it in photoshop
[Here is the one I used:]
4. Select all (ctrl+a) while in your contour map, copy (ctrl+c) and paste (ctrl+v) into your heightmap.
5. Using paint bucket, start painting the areas inbetween contour lines from black to grey. If you are more careful than me, you will get a BETTER image than this;

[Note: each increment of the RGB (Red,green, blue) value, eg 122,122,122 >> 123,123,123, will become 1 unit of height. The maximum is 255,255,255]
[The units of your heightmap were selected when you first made your level]
6. Save your image as a new file (File > Save as).
7. Try importing it into Crysis

Crysis: importing a heightmap
1. Go to: Terrain > edit terrain
2. Go to: File > import heightmap
3. Select a image (must be in powers of 2 and a bitmap [.bmp] )
4. Click ok.
5. If you have some edges click "smooth". [Thanks to Tim for this tip]

6. Go to: File > Generate surface textures. Done!

Tryout some photoshop filters:

EXP1 Comments

Alex Lorenzelli
Most significant weakness:Did not capitalise on using section cuts in animation to reveal key elements of the architecture.

Alisa Parveen
Most significant weakness:Architecture filled with ideas but not consolidated into an arrangement of organised and ordered hierarchy.

Anthony Porra
Key strength: Textures show evidence of care and consideration.
Most significant weakness:Did not submit animations or images of architecture.

Ben Filler
Key strength: Architecture clearly defines separate forms of above, in between and below.
Most significant weakness:Relationship between interior and exterior is lacking. Wall thickness of above ground space isn’t considered.

Bridget Allen
Key strength: Sketched sections and textures.
Most significant weakness: Enclosure of below ground architecture doesn’t exist. Minimal spatial exploration beyond simple extrusion.

Christopher John Day
Key strength: Integration between transparent and opaque materials.
Most significant weakness:Relationship between windows to each other seems arbitrary, and relationship to artist is very literal.

Chun Ho Chiu
Key strength: Interior has been developed with consideration to usage.
Most significant weakness:Animations are erratic in movement and don’t identify key aspects of the design to reveal/show.

James Crowe
Key strength: Stairs and catwalk relate to the architecture well.
Most significant weakness: Enclosure of all levels has not been considered, more importantly to below ground level. Minimal spatial exploration beyond simply extruding.

Jiming Wang
Key strength: Some consideration of formal spatial arrangement, however more could have been considered with interior.
Most significant weakness:Did not present the designed stairs in such a way that shows it in context or in detail.

Joel Davidson
Key strength: Stairs are thoughtful to bridge interior and exterior.
Most significant weakness:Did not submit animations, poor quality scanned images.

Kaung Myat Htoo Kyi
Key strength: Sketched sections show evidence of experimentation.
Most significant weakness:Did not submit any animations, screenshots of 3d model or stairs. Where is the architecture?

Minshan May Huang
Key strength: Sketched sections and textures.
Most significant weakness:Poor video quality did not do the architecture justice.

Mohamad Saj
Key strength: Architecture contains potential ideas but doesn’t develop them far enough.
Most significant weakness:Interior spaces do not demonstrate relationship to clients and artworks. Lacks spatial understanding below ground with no accessibility and stair openings.

Nastaran (Nina) Jafarigolrokh
Key strength: Sketched sections and textures show clear experimentation and a process of refinement.
Most significant weakness:Animations don’t demonstrate control nor identify key features of architecture to show.

Nikko Sudirman
Key strength: Architecture has a sense of control and containment. Larger forms have been resolved with finer details to create a well-considered architecture.
Most significant weakness:Drawing line work needs to show confidence and control. Textures lack detail which fails to demonstrate a finer precision.

Suek Yi Lim
Key strength: Elegant and complete form of architecture which opens up at nexus points to draw people into the gallery.
Most significant weakness:Detail of the structure in the architecture. Wall thicknesses? What are holding the giant glass panels up?

Weijie (Mike) Shen
Key strength: Sketched sections and textures demonstrate care and consideration.
Most significant weakness:Simplistic building with lack of order behind placing of elements.

Wen Chen
Key strength: Detail of interior and division of space demonstrate careful thinking of the placement of elements.
Most significant weakness:Larger scale form lack spatial experimentation which is so evident in the sections.

Yu-En (Timmy) Lin
Key strength: Architecture shows a confidence in risk taking and experimentation.
Most significant weakness:Architecture lacks control in ordering elements into a consolidated form.
